Words Will NEVER Describe God
I am an orator by trade. My job is to use words in a feeble attempt to describe God. Try as I may, I am very much aware that my words will never succeed in giving an accurate picture of God. One reason is that I simply don't know that much about God. I do know a little, and that little bit is absolutely powerful in my life. The little I know has brought a lot of heaven into my experience, but compared to God's bigness and beauty, there's so much that I cannot fathom.
I DO know a lot of things to say ABOUT God. I know a LOT about the scriptures. I know a LOT of theology, and I know a LOT about Christianity, but God is largely a beautiful and wonderful mystery to me. When I'm talking with others about the scriptures, theology, or Christianity, we can have some very interesting, fun, and even combative discussions. We will fill the room with facts that either verify or question our beliefs. Our passion for knowing has drawn us to much study and it's very interesting.
But to know God, it takes more, or maybe it takes less. We cannot educate ourselves into the knowledge of God. Any words that we read do not even touch it. What will we say? God is Love? God is Light? Those are great attempts, and they are probably as accurate as any statements can be, but then what is Love and Light? De we know what that means? Does a concordance definition satisfy us?
God cannot be accurately described, but God can be experienced. We can taste and see that God is good. We can take time with no words and simply rest in the divine presence of God as we contemplate God's endless goodness and love. Here is where we experience our own automatic adoration, gratitude, and fullness of joy as we go beyond words into the reality of our eternal existence. We find ourselves empowered in the bosom of the Father. This is the kingdom of heaven.
"For the kingdom of God is not in word but in power." - 1 Corinthians 4:20
I will continue to use words, but I will trust in the Greater One in you to unveil the unspeakable riches of Christ in you, the hope of glory. Because of that truth that goes beyond words, we can all know God, from the greatest to the least.
"Be still and know that I am God." - Psalm 46:10
